When it comes to selling items online, item photo with white background is the best choice to list item photos. White background for item photo will shift the focus on the item itself. The issue I faced in the past is that I wasn't able to make a white background item photo when I shoot with my smart phone. I spent so much money on shooting accessories like: lighting tent, lightning bulbs, stands. The result of all this didn't get me item photo with perfect white background. You will need some lighting and lighting tent, but there a final touch that you can apply to get the perfect white background for your item. The key is to remove all shadow areas in the item background, so that you will get the perfect white background for your item. Look at this for example:

The only thing is that I used free image-editing software called GIMP
After you download it and install it, open the photo that you shot with your camera or smart phone on GIMP, then follow the menu items as shown below:
Follow menu items Colors => Levels
When window pop up for you, click on "Pick white point" button
After that, click on a dark area in your photo that you want to turn it to white background.
Cool!
If the image still doesn't satisfy you, then click on "Reset" button, then click on "Pick white point", and try a different area, then you will see the result.
At the end click "OK", then you can either overwrite the image, or export the image into a new file with specified image format.
